Family activities to do at home when you think you’ve done it all.

Using items found within your home, these DIYs, experiments and crafts are sure to provide entertainment for the long days spent at home!

In the two months since Saskatchewan students were sent home from schools, a lot has changed for everyone. Teachers are hosting online classes, some parents have become stand-in teachers, and recess is spent in the backyard. With this increase of people in your home throughout the day, you may be needing to adjust your internet plan to accommodate the rise of service use. Thankfully, SaskTel has the mySaskTel app that allows for you to do that right from home!

If your time at home with kids has increased, you may be running out of fun and unique ideas to keep them busy, entertained and engaged. With potentially limited access to craft supplies, activities that use common household items are the way to go!

If your craft cupboard is running low on supplies (or you have no craft cupboard at all!), don’t worry! Here are some ways to make your own staple craft supplies, plus multiple interactive activities and crafts to do with items found around your kitchen and home.

Paint is the cornerstone to many crafts and at-home activities. Using four items from your kitchen, you and your children will be well on your way to painting rocks, pictures and cards, and working your way towards Picasso level artistry in no time!

You’ve got your paint, now all you need is a little bit of shaving cream to make an enjoyable, almost unassisted activity for your kids. Start with the cream and then let them add the paint, all that’s left is grabbing some white paper before you have a beautiful masterpiece on your hands! The best part about this adaptation of an ancient Japanese art form is that it can be adjusted for teens and adults to enjoy as well, with various levels if you want to test your techniques.

It’s a tale as old as time: a pair of socks go into the wash together and only one comes out. Where do they go? No one knows! Luckily, you can put those singles to use in an activity sure to keep the kids entertained outside for hours with this at home bubble maker.

If your children are looking for more results-driven activities for at-home fun, this might be right up their alley! Using only a bottle, a balloon, some vinegar, and baking soda, you’ve got an entertaining afternoon experiment with a setup time of only 5 minutes! Make sure to note the ratio of vinegar & baking soda to the size of balloon you’re using, or you may have a mess on your hands!

What’s better than mixing science with a bit of artistic flair? Not much! Bringing together bright colours and a bit of that magical feeling that comes with science, these kitchen table activities will have your kids intrigued and feeling independent when they get to run the whole experiment themselves.

It’s safe to assume that 2020 will be a year that none of us are soon to forget. Whether you’re at home with one kid or five, this craft brings the whole family together to create a keepsake of the time when you stayed home, together.

Last but not least, a round of applause is in order for everyone adapting to this increased time spent at home during our regular work and/or school hours. Shoutout to teachers. Shoutout to parents. Shoutout to students and children. It truly takes a village and you’re all doing better than you know!
